Why We Ride
As educators and life-long learners committed to the belief that education is a vehicle for inquiry, discovery, and the pursuit of happiness, Cailin and Emily are preparing to embark on a bike trip across the United States from Denver, Colorado to Missoula, Montana. We believe that for school to be a meaningful, motivating, and effective experience, it should model real life. This trip is our professional development, our moment to practice doing just that. It is our opportunity to model education as discovery, an experience that will require us to learn, explore, adapt, and discover- to continually revolt against stagnancy.
In addition to our personal goals on this journey, we will be riding to promote the venture of our friend Ben Page as he has co-founded a school of his own, The Open School. One of very few of its kind, The Open School is a democratic school in Orange County, California that aims to be "the school of the future, re-envisioning school based on the belief that students learn best through genuine experiences and following their interests. The Open School is committed to learner led education that respects, trusts, and empowers students to pursue their interests, optimize their potential as human beings, and allow their true selves to emerge."
Help us support a school with a philosophy connected with why we ride. As John Dewey once said, "Education isn't preparation for life. Education is life itself."
